Sculptural Stonework in Canterbury Residence
This extensively renovated Canterbury residence was designed to deliver a refined balance of luxury, functionality and contemporary family living. Stone Solutions was engaged to execute the home’s extensive stonework, bringing together natural stone, engineered surfaces and custom detailing across the kitchen, bathrooms, entry and entertaining areas.
PROJECT OVERVIEW: CANTERBURY FAMILY RESIDENCE
Set across two generous levels, the residence was comprehensively reimagined with a strong emphasis on craftsmanship, material consistency and seamless indoor-outdoor living. Stone was used throughout the home to define key spaces, introduce texture and create a cohesive visual language connecting the kitchen, bathrooms, entry and entertaining areas.
At the centre of the home is a showpiece kitchen featuring a Lorde White Dolomite island with fluted detailing, integrated lighting and curved waterfall edges. Negresco Quartzite was introduced across the cooktop, coffee nook and bar, creating a dramatic contrast against the custom soft green cabinetry.
DESIGN APPROACH
The design approach centred on allowing each stone to express its own character while maintaining balance across the broader interior. The soft movement of Lorde White Dolomite establishes the kitchen island as a sculptural focal point, while the darker Negresco Quartzite adds depth and definition to the surrounding work areas.
This material palette continues throughout the home. Emerald Haze Quartzite brings richness and individuality to the master ensuite, while Taj Mahal Quartzite and terrazzo introduce warmth and understated elegance within the main bathroom. Fluted stone surfaces, integrated lighting and carefully considered junctions reinforce the home’s bespoke character.
IMPLEMENTATION CHALLENGES
The project required the precise coordination of multiple stone types, curved profiles, fluted finishes and integrated architectural elements. Particular attention was given to the fabrication of the kitchen island, where curved waterfall edges, detailed veining and illuminated fluting needed to align seamlessly.
Stonework also had to integrate accurately with custom cabinetry, tapware, bathroom fixtures, retractable power points and LED lighting. Consistent communication between fabricators, builders, joiners, electricians and plumbers was essential to ensure each element was installed in the correct sequence and finished to a high standard.
FINAL RESULT
A sophisticated family residence where stone plays a defining role in both the architecture and the everyday experience of the home. From the dramatic kitchen island and extended servery to the individually designed bathrooms and statement entry flooring, every surface contributes to a cohesive and highly considered interior.
The completed home demonstrates how contrasting natural stones, custom fabrication and precise detailing can transform functional surfaces into enduring architectural features.
