Elegant Stonework in 1920s Cottage
DMC Building, a forward-thinking developer based in Sydney’s Inner West, set out to create a refined urban sanctuary with bold architectural character. To bring their vision to life, they entrusted Stone Solutions to deliver the precision and craftsmanship required to execute the project’s intricate stonework.
PROJECT OVERVIEW: 1920s Cottage Renovation
Nestled in Rozelle, where space is always a luxury, the task was to craft a kitchen that balances functionality with aesthetic appeal. To ensure a timeless and cohesive look, we selected a safe and neutral colour palette, accentuated with natural stone to introduce a touch of drama and serve as the centrepiece for the design.
DESIGN APPROACH
Budget considerations necessitated limiting the use of natural stone to just two slabs. After meticulously measuring the bench space, the remaining stone was used to size the island, allowing for a seamless vein-matched waterfall edge and a striking splashback. Achieving this balance felt like solving a game of Tetris – maximising both form and function within a limited material palette.
IMPLEMENTATION CHALLENGES
As is common in Rozelle, access posed logistical difficulties. Installation required additional structural support to prevent cracking of the stone. Precise coordination was key – plumbers and electricians worked in sync to integrate tapware and retractable power points on the same day. Impressively, we repurposed leftover stone into a custom chopping board, achieving an exceptional 92% material utilisation – a rarity in our industry.
FINAL RESULT
A small but impactful space that showcases the power of considered planning and execution. The result is a functional, refined kitchen where natural stone plays a starring role — adding timeless elegance and a bespoke finish to everyday living.
